The new TV series, Ya Ma'Afrika, certainly has a great premise and I applaud the effort. Its idea of "captur(ing) the cosmopolitan side of Africans, rarely shown" follows the stories of 4 African immigrant women living in Brooklyn, NY. They deal with issues that the Sex&theCity types dealt with -- sex, dating, career challenges-- but what sets them apart are other pressing issues dealing with immigration and HIV/AIDS. It is a powerful attempt at drawing attention away from the mainstream exposure of Africans in poverty which also challenges the labels of black vs. African vs. African-American.
Unfortunately, the production of the series falls flat and falls prey to the bad lighting trap of daytime soaps. They need to fire the lighting guy and the camera guy in order for them to have a fighting chance. Hey, something's gotta give for the bigger picture.
